Cut Chemist – “Outro” Released

release

“Outro” Featuring Blackbird – 7″/12″ is now available from A Stable Sound. This is the first single from Cut Chemist since 2007’s “What’s the Altitude?”. Be Hussey recorded the bass and drums here during the 2011 tracking of the live instrumentation for Cut Chemist’s new full-length coming sometime in the future. On that note, Hussey worked with Cut Chemist on the design of these releases as well using photos by Jenne Eden taken from the video (see below).

Nick Rosen – “Violet” Released

release

March 20, 2012 – Nick Rosen “Violet” Album Release on Porter Records (US) – Worldwide. Be Hussey recorded a couple tracks (uncredited) from this album out now.

Multi-instrumentalist, song writer, singer, Nick Rosen takes his latest release “Violet” into a new direction of folk, soul, pop and jazz. Each track is uniquely different yet there is a common thread of Rosen’s tasteful approach to song writing. Melodic pop songs fall away into burning groves of modern day soul that intern blend into an intimate jazz trio. None of the tracks on the album have any editing and most songs were first or second takes. “I really wanted to capture the moment and was less concerned with perfection, I wanted the emotion of me in the studio with the person or persons that I was doing the track with…” says Rosen. Additional musicians for this project included: Anthony Valadez, Sam Barsh, Paris Carney, Greg Garbowsy, Maiya Sykes, and Dexter Story.

Radar Brothers – Mixing

Mixing in the Digital Age, A Love Story.

The last couple weeks has been a mixing whirlwind here with Radar Brothers. After repeated blows to Jim Putnam’s studio from the solar flares as well as the fallout from Mercury being in retrograde, the mixing sessions have been moved over here to company.

But before moving, we got down to some direction-setting tests on capturing an analog mix in the digital domain. (One of the casualties of the solar flares was the 1/2″ mixdown deck over there, so we needed a Plan B). Answer: Capturing the analog mix through Universal Audio 2192 running Pro Tools at 96k. Yes.

Digital vs. Analog

Each song has been mixed to both the 1/4″ 2-track as well as directly captured by a laptop using the UA 2192 converter at 96k. We have been comparing both mixes and for the most part we have been choosing the digital version. Since this was an analog recording, we didn’t feel the need for the extra analog goo that usually imparts a finishing touch on a mix. The full resolution sound of the 2192 has been very impressive.

Also noted is the Chameleon Labs 7720 Buss compressor. We’ve been using that for the 2-mix and it has also been shining like a bright new penny. Just lopping off a few dBs from the top and all is well.

Is that enough gearSpeak for you? If not, contact us. There’s plenty more where that came from.

Sonnymoon – “Just Before Dawn (feat. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson)” Released

release

Check out the new single by Sonnymoon. The alternate version on the single features strings by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson recorded here last fall by Be Hussey. These two new tracks are from their upcoming full-length S/T release due May 22, 2012 on Plug Research.

January 2012 – New Year, New Gear, Fresh Ears

Things are ramping up to be a big year here at company. Lots in store for the studio sonically, visually and “functionally”.

Music:
Let’s start with all the work we’ve been doing with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson…We’ve been tracking Miguel doing loads of strings and orchestra arrangements for upcoming albums by The Gaslamp Killer, Dark Angels (Deantoni Parks and Nicci Caspar), Dexter Story. Many exciting projects for Miguel (and us!) on the horizon this year as well.

On another note, we recently launched Miguel’s website as well (we wear many hats here). Miguel has played on over 300 albums for a wide range of artists and we attempted to capture that essence with his website. Check it out.

Next up is Joey Dosik. We’ve done a stack of all-analog tracks with Joey starting back in the late fall. The songs sound spot-on and are coming along great and we expect him to start rolling out these tunes in 7″ form (!) by this spring. More on that later.

The Star Maps record has been mastered by Mark Chalecki for release this coming spring. Another analog-recorded record done all here at company. Very happy with the way this one turned out.

Mixed a couple tracks for Damin Suarez and his band Go West Young Man. Sounding great and ready for early February mastering.

The Damselles & The TC4 were in for a few days tracking a new record with former Capitol Records engineer Paul Smith. We think it went well! Expect a new release in the coming year.

Ariana Delawari – “De Koknar Le Zara”

the poison of opium

Recently mixed 2 versions of the song “De Koknar Le Zara (the poison of opium)” with Ariana Delawari (two different Afghani languages). This was a song Ariana was commissioned to for an Afghan anti opium/heroin campaign.

“Hello friends, I was asked by the US government and Afghan governments to write a song for an anti heroin/anti opium campaign. here is the Pashto version of the song. I hope you enjoy it… and pray for a peaceful, prosperous Afghanistan where we don’t have the darkness of heroin and opium addiction furthering an already grave situation” -Ariana Delawari (from her blog)
